Ullapool Trip - 24 to 31 March 2007
Those coming are:
Staying in Tigh na Mara (15 West Shore Street):
Martin Banfield
Andrew Johnston
Dave Oliver
Barry Walton
Julie Brown
(Martin will pay for accommodation and provisions and recoup costs at the end of the week)
Booked separately:
Pam and Paul Conroy (cottage)
Sue and Phil Williams (cottage - up to Wednesday)
Janet and David Jardine (poss overnight visit)
Martin Scoular (poss SYHA)
The present plan is as follows:
Saturday - all travel up and eat in respective cottages. Gravitate to Tigh na Mara or a local bar.
Sunday - after our exercise for the day, I suggest we go to the Bistro or the Ceilidh Place (or those who want to can cook at home).
Monday - round off with a 'progressive meal'....
Tuesday - Sue and Phil's last day - perhaps an opportunity to eat at the Morefield Motel.
Wednesday/Thursday - eat at cottages
Friday - fish and chip shop.
As regards the walks, Julie has already said "I will be bringing my bike up. I would like to do Foinaven and Sail Mhor, and 3 remote Corbetts with a couple of Grahams in Section 15 (maybe some bike jobs), + also maybe a cycle into Fisherfield for a couple of distant Corbetts."
Julie, Sue, Phil and I will all have bikes. Andrew is insured to drive the 'bus'.
Carn Ban - 845 metres, Corbett (page 198) is a favoured destination. But it's a 43km round trip. Bikes can be used for 32km of that, so only those with bikes are likely to attempt this.
Foinaven is a 4.5 hour walk to the summit (after a longish drive), so quite a demanding day. Also from the same starting point are Arkle and Meall Horn, either of which would provide a shorter day (3 hours to each summit). I've not been up the latter, so am up for that.
Quinag is a great day out.
Cul Mor, Cul Beag, Ben Mor Coigach and Stac Pollaidh are also well worth visiting.
Canisp is another easy Corbett - less than 3 hours from the road.
Suilven is another good walk, after a longish drive, but allow at least 4 hours to reach the top.
Sail Mhor is an outlier of An Teallach which gives superb views and is an easy day - 2.5 hours to the top.
And there are many more; let's hope for some good weather.
