Hartington to Alstonefield and back
Start outside the Devonshire Arms in Hartington for a 15 km stroll.
Route Summary
1->2->1
A circuit from Hartington starting at 10.00 am
From Manchester, after reaching Buxton by the A6, take the A515 Ashbourne road. Follow this for a few miles before turning right down the B5054 to Hartington. It may be possible to park in the square, or there is a Pay and Display (£4.20 for the day) car park on the right just through the village on the Warslow road. Allow one and a quarter hours from Manchester.
Unfortunately Beresford Tea Rooms don't open until 10.30, so if you want a cuppa before starting - bring a flask!

Overview
1->2->1
1 SK 128 604 229 - The Devonshire
Arms, Hartington
1->2 6.6km, 250 metres ascent, 2 hours 15 mins
Leave by a path past the toilets opposite the pay and display car park, heading
south across fields to reach the wooded confines of Beresford Dale. Continue
through the dale on the left bank of the infant River Dove, into Wolfscote
Dale. Soon after crossing the tributary that arrives from Biggin Dale to the
left, go right over a narrow footbridge and ascend up a steep path heading
west. At a freshly repaired gate at the top of the hill, go half left across
the field and pass to the left of some barns. Continue on along this path
all the way to Alstonefield, for lunch at the George.
2 SK 131 555 280 - The George, Alstonefield
2->1
8.4km, 300 metres ascent, 2 hours 35 mins
After a sumptuous lunch, go left from The George and proceed due east down
the narrow lane (Lode Lane), taking the second path on the left which soon
passes a YHA camping barn. This path leads eventually, and ultimately steeply,
to Coldeaton Bridge where a footbridge provides access to the left bank of
the River Dove. Cross the river and turn left, heading north and after a few
minutes passing the footbridge used earlier. Continue on to the junction with
Biggin Dale and bear right up this dale. The path emerges from this dale after
about 3 km at a minor road, to the left of which is Dale End. Turn left when
the road is reached, and leave the road at Dale End, in favour of a left fork
down a track which leads back to Hartington where, if it is before 4.30 pm,
the tea rooms may now provide succour.
