1 -> 2 (9.38 Km) Leave the station going towards the Exhibition Hall, turning sharp left almost immediately following signs on the wall to Castlefield.  Continue along walkway over old railway bridge, past the CP, to metal steps down into Castlefields.

Cross to right hand of Roman Fort, ahead down steps, past Castlefield Hotel and onto Liverpool Road.

Continue to turn right at Water St, then left at next junction.  Cross over Princes Bridge, over the river, and under the railway to bear right at the roundabout by Lloyd's Metals.

Go down East Ordsall Lane, under railway bridge, and where the road goes right continue straight on along Stevenson St, over a grassy bank by cycle way signs into George St.  Baroque tower of St Phillip's Church is ahead, Salford Cathedral is the neo-Gothic church on the right.

Turn left along Chapel St, cross Oldfield Rd, and continue past a fine Regency Crescent of houses to Salford Uni.

Go down signed path at side of the first block, to Peel Park (Sir Robert Peel - 1788-1850 - Home Sec, PM, founder of modern Police Force, born in Bury).  Bear left at 1st junction to join main drive.  Continue past flower beds/lamps and turn right at the end towards a footbridge.  Don't cross, go by river past recreation ground as far as Frederick Road.  Cross bridge and continue on Irwell Valley Way on other side of river.  Soon cross a footbridge and then north past new housing to Cromwell Road by Cromwell Bridge.

Cross road and continue by tall iron gates into the Castle Irwell Estate.  Carry on beside the river past what used to be Manchester Racecourse, the Cliff on the far side, St Paul's church at Kelsall (slender spire) ahead, eventually going right over a fine single arched footbridge.

Tarmac path ahead past flats, ends past the entrance to the Cliff, but go ahead uphill over open land (good views), bearing left near the brow towards Oaklands Infant school, following the fence to join Oaklands Road.

Turn right, and at junction with Moor Lane cross over to Kersall Moor (sandy heathland) along winding gravelly path, turning towards St Paul's.

Path by churchyard eventually emerges at Bury New Road.

Turn left, then right by pelican xing into King's Road.  1st left into Rochester Ave, leading to Queen's Road.  Keep ahead into Sedgeley Park Road, past College, to Scholes Lane.  Cross over; turn left the first right down Ostrich Lane (named after coat of arms of a local family).  Take a left - Blackburn St - after the lane bears right.  Turn right into Whitaker Lane, past St Hilda's Church.  The Royal Oak (Hydes) is on the right, and beyond is Heaton Park Metrolink Station.
